Which Wrangler do you have? Start here.
JL and JK exhaust systems are not directly interchangeable as bolt-on systems. The rear frame geometry, hanger positions, and pipe routing differ between generations, so confirm your generation before you order.
| Generation | Years | Body Style | Engines Covered | Notes |
|---|
| JL / JLU | 2018+ | 2-door + 4-door | 3.6L V6, 2.0T L4 (gasoline engines; EcoDiesel and 392 V8 variants not covered by these systems) | Some exhausts are engine-specific; others, like the aFe MACH Force-Xp, are designed to fit both the 2.0T and 3.6L JL engines |
| JK / JKU | 2007-2018 | 2-door + 4-door | 3.8L V6 (2007-2011), 3.6L V6 (2012-2018) | MBRP dual rear exit fits the chassis across 2007-2018 but note that Jeep offered the 3.8L V6 through 2011 and the 3.6L from 2012; match your year and engine to the manufacturer's application notes |
For most gas Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon trims in each generation, hanger layout is the same, but special editions and hybrid/392 variants may differ, always check manufacturer fitment notes. If you run a large aftermarket tire carrier or extreme rear armor, check tailpipe clearance before ordering.
Axle-back, cat-back, or muffler bypass: which fits your goal?
For most Wrangler owners, an axle-back is the right starting point. It replaces the muffler and tailpipe from the rear axle back, uses factory hangers, and installs in under an hour with basic tools. Sound change is immediate and noticeable, with no tune required and no check engine light.
A cat-back goes further back toward the catalytic converter, adding more pipe length and flow. The sound gain over an axle-back is real but modest; the bigger benefit is when you combine it with intake and tuning mods later.
The muffler bypass, like the MBRP 2.5in muffler bypass pipe for the JL 3.6L, removes the factory muffler entirely. It is the loudest option available and produces a raw, aggressive note that suits trail use well. The trade-off is real: highway drone increases noticeably, and cold starts on a quiet street will get attention. If you commute more than you trail-ride, this is not the right daily setup.
Sound profiles compared: MBRP, AWE, aFe, Borla
The Borla ATAK is Borla's most aggressive sound family. It is a legitimate daily driver for owners who do not mind cabin volume at sustained motorway speeds, but if you are noise-sensitive on long drives, the AWE Tread Edition or aFe MACH Force-Xp will serve you better long-term. Both deliver a clear performance character without the drone penalty.
Power gains from an axle-back alone are modest, typically in the low-single-digit HP range on a dyno, if any measurable gain; the real benefit is throttle response and sound. Pair an axle-back with a cold air intake and a tune later if you want meaningful HP numbers.
FAQ
Do I need a tune after installing one of these exhaust systems?
No. All five systems listed here are designed to run on the factory ECU calibration with the factory catalytic converters in place. No tune needed, no check engine light in the standard setup.
What is included in the kit?
These systems generally include the necessary exhaust sections and hardware and reuse factory hangers. For exact contents and install requirements, see each manufacturer's installation guide.
Are these street legal in Europe?
These systems retain the factory catalytic converters and are not emissions-delete kits. They are not certified to any EU homologation standard, so check your local noise and emissions regulations before fitting to a road-registered vehicle.
Will the black tips rust or fade?
On the stainless systems, the black tip finish is a coating over T304/T409 stainless steel, which resists corrosion in European winter conditions significantly better than aluminized steel. Some value-oriented systems use coated aluminized steel; those are more prone to corrosion than stainless. Black tip finishes hold up well in normal use but can show wear with aggressive cleaning products.
Can I order these in Europe without import fees?
Yes. We handle import duties and ship from our EU base for EU customers, so you won't see extra customs fees; stock status is shown on each product page.
