Care without borders or fuel.

Solar Team Eindhoven — the student team from Eindhoven University of Technology with four consecutive Cruiser Class victories at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge — has announced its most ambitious concept to date. Stella Juva is the world's first ambulance designed to run entirely on solar energy while simultaneously powering the medical equipment it carries onboard.

The vehicle targets a specific gap in global healthcare: regions where conventional ambulances are difficult, costly, or unreliable to deploy because fuel supply is unstable, charging infrastructure is absent, or roads are too rough for medical vehicles. In those regions, a self-sufficient mobile clinic that can drive long distances, diagnose on-site, and recharge medical equipment from sunlight addresses a problem that existing emergency services cannot solve.

Road approval in the Netherlands is targeted for July 2026, with live field testing at planned NGO partner sites scheduled for August 2026. The team is building on a portfolio that includes Stella Vita, the long-distance solar camper, and Stella Terra, the first off-road solar vehicle, which completed more than 1,000 km across Morocco including desert terrain.

Making a solar ambulance controllable under road, payload, and field conditions — simultaneously.

A solar vehicle's energy budget is dominated by vehicle mass. An ambulance, however, must meet rigorous safety and handling standards and carry several hundred kilograms of medical payload. Reconciling those constraints — low vehicle mass, predictable braking behaviour, and reliable operation across rough or remote terrain — is one of the central engineering challenges in the build.

Tuningsupply is supplying critical Wilwood braking and vehicle-control components for Stella Juva: an electronic parking brake retrofit kit, remote master cylinders, and an adjustable proportioning valve. Together, these components support braking control, vehicle holding, and brake-balance adjustment under changing payload, traction, and field-test conditions.

System Contribution Engineering constraint
Parking brake Wilwood Electronic Parking Brake Rear Retrofit Kit, 1.250 in rotor, black Secure vehicle holding, road approval readiness, compact brake-control integration
Hydraulic brake control Wilwood GS Remote Master Cylinder, .500 in bore Compact hydraulic actuation, controlled pedal response, lightweight packaging
Brake balance Wilwood Proportioning Valve, knob-adjust, M10x1 BBF inlet/outlet Adjustable brake bias for changing payload, traction, and field-test conditions
What makes this project strong is that we can build on existing expertise from European specialists. Partners like Tuningsupply allow us to develop technology that is ready for practical deployment, not just demonstration.

Field tests at NGO sites, August 2026.

Following road approval in July 2026, Solar Team Eindhoven will deploy Stella Juva at planned NGO partner sites to validate the vehicle in the operating conditions it was designed for. The test program is designed to demonstrate three things: that the vehicle can transport patients in terrain where conventional ambulances are difficult or unreliable to deploy, that onboard medical equipment can be powered and recharged from the solar array during operation, and that the vehicle can function as a mobile clinic in locations without grid electricity.

PRESS RELEASE — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Students Announce Stella Juva: The World's First Solar-Powered Ambulance

Eindhoven, 16 July 2026 — Dutch student team Solar Team Eindhoven has announced a new concept for sustainable medical mobility: Stella Juva. The team aims to make medical care accessible in regions where infrastructure and fuel supply are limited.

Care without borders or fuel

Stella Juva is the world's first ambulance designed to run entirely on solar energy while also powering all onboard medical equipment. The vehicle is expected to receive Dutch road approval in July 2026. The concept offers a direct alternative for regions where fuel or electricity shortages currently restrict access to healthcare. A full project overview, including photography, is available on the Tuningsupply project page.

Proven technology from Eindhoven

The team builds on a strong innovation record: the students from Eindhoven have won the Cruiser Class of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge four consecutive times in Australia. The expertise for Stella Juva also draws on projects such as Stella Terra, the world's first off-road solar vehicle, which completed more than 1,000 km across Morocco.

"What makes this project strong is that we can build on existing expertise from European specialists," says Steven Swinkels, Technical & Events Manager at Solar Team Eindhoven. "We work with local specialist partners — including the Dutch company Tuningsupply, which is responsible for supplying critical Wilwood braking and vehicle-control components. This allows us to develop technology that is ready for practical deployment."

Field tests at humanitarian organizations

In August 2026, the team will test the solar ambulance in practice by visiting planned field sites of local NGOs. The tests will demonstrate how Stella Juva can support patient care and safely charge and operate medical equipment in locations that are difficult to reach with conventional emergency services.

Zorg zonder grenzen of brandstof
